Gandhi Jayanti 2017

 India will be celebrating the 148th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 2017. Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of Our Nation was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat in a Hindu Gujarati family. His parents were Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai. Mahatma Gandhi’s real name was named Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi but Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore gave him the title of ‘Mahatma’ with which he is more popularly known today. Mahatma Gandhi not only was instrumental in securing Independence for India but was also an integral part of many movements around the world. Martin Luther King Jr. was highly impressed by Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings of non-violence and propounded his theory to his followers. Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday that falls on October 2 is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence keeping in mind that the leader was against violence of any kind and protested against the British rule through peaceful protests and satyagrahas.thanks



 Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse who was not happy with Mahatma Gandhi’s acceptance of the partition of India. Godse was angry over the fact that Mahatma Gandhi had given in to the demands of partitioning India in two separate nations and he was also horrified looking at the bloodshed that followed suit. Mahatma Gandhi who was fondly called as ‘Bapu’ (Father) was recognized as the Father of the Nation and his birth anniversary is a designated National Holiday, the only other day apart from Independence Day and Republic Day which is given this recognition
